Abortion will be the business of the century

22.04.2008 14:27

To exchange women’s rights for health service reform, that is the deal Christian democratic deputies see as the key part of their program priorities. It is the business they want to pass. So they made a deal.

If you privatise hospitals, we will regulate abortions. A Christian form of a deal, where both sides profit. The idea is, that the law should drag the biological father into the decision process and the same law should change the time period, when abortion is possible, from 24 to 18 months, making it possible only for health reasons. Girls from 16 to 18 years of age will have to ask their parents for permission to terminate their pregnancy. A Christian form of secular democracy.

Dear Sally, how should I tell them, when they still think I am a virgin?

And you are not? Prey to God, child, and he will show you the way …

I am a woman, a mother of two almost grown up children and we live in the 21st century. Medical science can keep a 600-gram baby alive, but on the other hand, we cannot accept the fact that women are human beings with human rights and that they are able to make decisions about their lives for themselves. Men have to tell them what they should or should not do.

In a rational society the decision about the time period, during which abortion is possible, would be left to doctors. They know very well where to set the limits. They are bound by an oath free from any ideological or religious doctrines, ideas or prejudice. The decision to terminate her pregnancy is not an easy one to do for any woman, but when she comes to such a decision, the abortion should be legal and safe. Sixteen year old girls, who are not ready to be mothers, and who are often ashamed of being pregnant, might have problems with their parents or might have been abused by their father, should ask his permission to terminate the pregnancy?

It would be better if the Christian democrats exchanged their plans to regulate abortions for a real support for families in need. It might be better if a Christian democratic Minister of Finance opened the state treasury and his fellow party members opened their hearts to those, who are in need. They should not cut down child benefits or increase doctor fees for children less than 18 years of age. Michaela Šojdrova seems almost as a martyr after she introduced her “anti-administration” bill, but the position of the Christian democrats in the government is only as strong as their conviction about the anti-social nature of the governmental conceptions. But how can we expect people, who are trying to impose their views on others, to behave in a democratic manner? Mysterious are the ways of our Lord, and so are the ways of Christian democratic politicians.

Christianity of the new millennium does not inculcate upon us by draconian rules, that we should behave contrary to our convictions and opinion, but it sets a positive example. The example of love that is giving. Such a Christian point of view is modern, liberal, but not dogmatic. Such political party is Christian and democratic. We should remind the Christian democrats the words of Apostle Paul addressing the Corinthians. Because from Christian point of view love is not dishonest, love does not want to profit.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

1 Corinthians, 1-3

Christian democratic deputies do not seem to understand the sinfulness of a man; they do not speak the language of love and tolerance of the minority opinion in the majority secular society. They speak the language of Giorlamo Savonarola, building the republic of Christ. The next Christian democratic reform of this government might set up abortion commissions. They might even set up police detachments for civil morals control, as in Florence in Savonarola´s time. I am glad to be of such an age, that I cannot have children any more. I can imagine how it would be: I would not be able to decide for my child, and myself but it would be some Christian or Civic democratic commission that would make the decision. What a horrible imagination. It might be necessary to call upon the Christian democrats, as Savonarola was called upon - to prove the truthfulness of their ideas by the examination by fire.
